Aishwarya Rai and Sushmita Sen set the ball rolling for Indian girls to storm the modeling world by winning Miss World and Miss Universe pageants in the year 1994 respectively. This achievement led many girls to take up modeling as a career in India. But Women body building is not so popular among Indian girls. Here is the story of a 21-year girl Bhumika Sharma who broke all stereotypes by winning the World Championship in Body Building held recently in Venice, Italy. She is the first Indian Bodybuilder to be crowned Miss World in body building. Obviously, whole Nation is proud of this girl, and Kalam Fan Club is celebrating her victory over 50 strong contestants from across the globe with this dedication post to her.
Bhumika is the only daughter of Mrs. Hansa Manral Sharma, who is the head coach of Indian Women Weightlifting team and Mr. Vishwavijay Sharma a business man. So muscle power is not an unknown entity to Bhumika Sharma. But in her childhood days, her parents had thought of grooming her in the arena of shooting and even she was practicing hard to become a shooter. But her destiny had different plans – she accidentally met a body building coach Mr. Bhupendar Sharma. A small chat with Bhupendra prompted her to take up Body Building by quitting shooting.
Bhumika hails from Dehradun and is the only bodybuilder from the hilly state of Uttar Khand. In the World Championship at Venice along with Bhumika 27 other Indian participants took place but Bhumika was lone women bodybuilder from India. This gritty girl from Doon bagged maximum points in body posing, individual posing, and fall category to be adjudged winner of a gold medal. About her preparation, she has shared with media that rigorous 7 hours of training every day under the guidance of a coach is routine for her. Presently she is focussing on upcoming Miss. Universe Championship to be held in December this year.
Though Bhumika Sharma is the first Indian women to bag a Gold medal in World Body Building Championship, the legacy of Indian women making it big in Bodybuilding has interesting contributors.
Ms. Ashwini Waskar is considered as First female bodybuilder from India. Her childhood dreams were not of becoming Engineer or Doctor. Being the first ever female to venture into body building her career path was not smooth at the age of 32 she got the recognition as first competitive female bodybuilder from India.
Ms. Sarita Devi made Indians proud by bagging a bronze medal in world bodybuilding championship in 55 kg category in the year 2015. She has also participated in Boxing. Ms. Deepika Chowdhury has won laurels for the country by bagging the Overall Figure title at the 2015 NPC Steve Stone Metropolitan Championship 2015.
With many girls thronging Indian sports arena today we have Saina Nehwal, P V Sindhu in Badminton and now Bhumika Sharma in Bodybuilding time has come for girls to break away from stereotypical careers and take on the world with fresh challenges.
