People with overweight are targeted for the extra muscles they have and are being mocked by onlookers and friends alike. This kind of fat-shaming makes them undergo depression and also puts a big dent in their confidence. They undergo a lot of mental stress and have to fight hard with their emotion every single day. There are many who give up going outside so as to be far away from people who mock them and many others stop giving those negative people any importance. But there are a few who take these remarks seriously and challenge themselves to shed those extra muscles. They go the extreme level to change themselves and give it back to the negative people with style. Sam Rouen made his first appearance on the national television in 2008 as a contestant of the third series of ‘The Biggest Loser’. This is a reality show that gives an opportunity for the overweight guys to compete against each other to win the cash prize. The winner is selected from the bunch of candidates who loses the highest weight in about 12-week duration. Sam Rouen who weighed 154 kgs before entering the show, lost 71 kilograms of weight in about 12 weeks in the show. As he was the contestant who lost the highest weight in the stipulated time, he was announced as the winner of the third edition of ‘The Biggest Loser’.
If you think the journey to fitness ended with the show, then you are wrong. The journey to fitness which started with the beginning of the show has continued even after 10 years. Sam fondly tells that he has not stopped taking care of his body and hence takes time out every day to make sure he exercises regularly to keep his body in the desired shape. Though Sam has appeared on the prestigious Firefighter calendar, Sam admits that he still has anxiety issues and hesitates to unbutton his shirt even at the beach. He says, he was extremely self-conscious and when he was about to take off his shirt for the calendar, but, he reminded himself that he was doing it for the benefit of the children.
He says, he has fond memories of childhood, as even though he was overweight, his friends had been very supportive and never made any remarks that would hurt him. But as he grew older and appeared on the Firefighter Calendar with a toned down body, people have started making remarks at him, some going to the extent of calling him as – Calendar boy. He says, though the remarks are made in good fun, they tend to hit the nerve which makes him self-conscious again and again.
He says, the journey of this incredible transformation has been like a dream come true and he has worked really hard to achieve whatever he has achieved today. He cannot even imagine how could he move around with so much of weight says Sam and is really happy that he is in great shape now.
“You can be at your lowest point, and with a bit of hard work and persistence, you can turn it around and fulfill your dreams”, says Sam for the generation that is looking up to people like him to get motivated to embark on a journey of transformation. Sam says if he can do it, then anybody can.
10 years ago if someone had said, he would be as fit to appear on a prestigious calendar everyone including Sam would laugh it off but now that he has achieved what seemed impossible a decade ago, Sam has proved to the world that achieving dreams aren’t impossible tasks. It only requires hard work and persistence to be able to achieve your dreams.
