Krtin Nithiyanandam, a 15-year-old boy from Epsom, Surrey, claims that he has discovered a cure for one of the deadliest forms of cancer – breast cancer. The young boy believes that he has found out a method to turn the most dangerous form of triple negative breast cancer into one which responds well to the treatment. The teenager is working day and night to make advancement in his research and help those unfortunate women who otherwise have to live a short life. Breast Cancer which claims thousands of lives every year has been much talked about, and many are experimenting ways to find a cure to the deadly disease which may result in saving thousands of precious lives every year.
Krtin Nithiyanandam had earlier won the Google Science Fair award in 2015 for his creation of an Alzheimer’s test which would detect the early signs of the disease, is now working on the therapy which can bring an end to the breast cancer which claims precious lives every year. The boy is carrying on with his experiment in his school laboratory and hopes that the scientific community will come forward to help him take this experiment forward and make advancement in the field.
“Most cancers have receptors on their surface which bind to [treatment] drugs like Tamoxifen, but triple negative don’t have receptors, so the drugs don’t work,” Krtin told The Telegraph.
“The prognosis for women with undifferentiated [where the cells get stuck in a dangerous, aggressive form] cancer isn’t very good, so the goal is to turn cancer back to a state where it can be treated.
“The ID4 protein stops undifferentiated stem cell cancers from differentiating [a form where the cells tend to grow and multiply slowly], so you have to block ID4 to allow cancer to differentiate.
“I have found a way to silence the genes that produce ID4 which turns cancer back into a less dangerous state,” Krtin added.
“I have been trying to work out a way to change difficult-to-treat cancers into something that responds well to the treatment”.
Krtin who is doing his everything to make the therapy a simple one and one that actually cures the cancer of the patient without having to go through rigorous treatment is applauded by the scientific community. His therapy idea which was shortlisted for the finals of The Big Bang Fair competition is gaining importance day by day, and interested people are coming forward to provide the boy with all the facilities that would help him take his research to the next level.
“Around 15 percent of people diagnosed with breast cancer have triple negative breast cancer,” said Dr Emma Pennery, Clinical Director at Breast Cancer Care.
“Breast cancer cells are routinely tested for ‘receptors’ to see what’s helping them to grow. The three most commonly used tests are for estrogen, progesterone and a protein called HER2.
“Triple-negative breast cancer does not have these receptors and so much less is known about what makes it grow. Thus, it can be difficult to treat successfully. There are fewer treatment options available – hormone therapy, such as Tamoxifen, and most targeted therapy drugs, like Herceptin, are of no benefit.
“Overall triple negative breast cancer has a worse outlook in the first few years. However, it often responds well to chemotherapy, and longer-term survival is similar to other types of breast cancer.”
The charity houses that run campaigns to help people fight breast cancer are of the opinion that new methods to treat triple negative cancer are the need of the hour and this new development made by Krtin may well be the one that will help people live a long and happy life without having to worry about the life-threatening disease.
We at Abdul Kalam Fan Club congratulate the young prodigy who has developed a tool to fight one of the deadliest cancers at an age when children spend time in front of the computers wasting time online. We really do hope that he will be successful in his experiment and his new method will stop the deaths that take place due to breast cancer. Its people like Krtin who change the world for better and we do hope there will be many more Krtin’s who with their inventions will make this world a better place to live than ever before.
